One night Ms. Haddad ran out of propane and improvised — she cooked dinner on a portable camping grill. And the evening before her most elaborate party — a “bark mitzvah” for her dog, Kelbi, in 2003 — was the night of the blackout.
It went off without a hitch. Ms. Haddad had a carnival-style fortuneteller to entertain 150 guests and served snow cones spiked with rum and vodka. Each guest got a gift bag, including a purple suede yarmulke, baseball hat and a magnet with a picture of Kelbi seated on a motorcycle.
“Nothing,” she said, “not even the electric company, could stop a party.”
