Form Spring: What's in a name?
So the 2 Form Spring questions I got (only 2, you guys? You really know how to make a girl feel wanted…) pertained to my handle, adeandabet. Both questions wanted to know what it means, so here you go:
My name is Adrian Dallas (Dallas = my middle name). My friends and family call me “Ade” for short (pronounced like “Aid” - but I don’t like spelling it that way, to avoid ambiguity with the verb). As stated on my blog’s page, I’m a staunch advocate for the legalization of magic and will therefore facilitate and foster any magical criminal or magic activity. AdeandAbet is a pun on Aid and Abet, a term used in the legal world or otherwise, thusly:
Meaning
To help and encourage, usually in the commission of a crime or anti-social act.
Origin
‘Aid and abet’ is a common enough expression but, whilst ‘aid’ is well-known, what does ‘abet’ mean exactly? The word derives from the French ‘abeter’ - to hound, which itself derives from the Norse ‘beita’ - to cause to bite.
The phrase ‘aid and abet’ was coined in the late 18th century, by which time the term ‘abet’ had lost its original ‘cause to bite’ meaning. (via The Phrase Finder)
So that is that. Now, I know you can do better than that! Where’s the real juice, people!
