jasencomstock: azspot: The ACLU of Maryland is defending Anthony Graber, who potentially faces sixteen years in prison if found guilty of violating state wiretap laws because he recorded video of an officer drawing a gun during a traffic stop.  In a trend that we’ve seen across the country, police have become  increasingly hostile to bystanders recording their actions.  You can read some...

Münchausen by Internet →
readmorewikipedia: Münchausen by Internet is a pattern of behavior in which Internet users seek attention by feigning illnesses in online venues such as chat rooms, message boards, and Internet Relay Chat (IRC). As manipulation is integral to most cases, the need to control others to feel as if the perpetrator is in control of his or her own life is apparent, as is the pre-existence of...

Lost in Translation: Does Language Influence... →
Language is a uniquely human gift. When we study language, we are uncovering in part what makes us human, getting a peek at the very nature of human nature. As we uncover how languages and their speakers differ from one another, we discover that human natures too can differ dramatically, depending on the languages we speak. The next steps are to understand the mechanisms through which...

bunch: You saw what Greece did to the global economy. They were the 27th largest economy in the world.’ California is the 8th. They’re $19 billion in the hole. You care to estimate how long the line of people owed money by the Governator and the people of California is? When this one hits the fan, we’re all going to be covered in it.  Home state, FTW!

But I’m really digging the David Byrne/Fatboy Slim musical concept album, Here Lies Love, about Imelda Marcos featuring Cyndi Lauper, Sharon Jones, Florence Welch, Tori Amos, Shara Worden, Sia, Santigold, Roisin Murphy, Martha Wainwright, Nellie McKay and more.  It’s a great dance album (and with a concept and story to boot) - perfect summer music.

Credit Cards Take From Poor, Give to the Rich -... →
robot-heart-politics: abbyjean: A new paper from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston says merchant fees and reward programs offered by many credit-card issuers essentially take money from those who have the least and give it to those who have the most. The imbalance may have to be remedied via government intervention, the authors, Scott Schuh, Oz Shy and Joana Stavins, argued. The paper was...
